10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
8/10
Directed by Jill Junger
Starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
This film is one I was recommended to watch many times but never did until very recently.
To begin, I have to say that I really liked this film. And after my watch, it has become one of my favorite rom-com’s, maybe even cracked it’s way into my top 2 behind The Proposal (2009).
I really enjoyed the overall storyline of this film. What really makes the story engaging in my opinion is the personalites of the characters, especially Kat. Julia Stiles was great with her portrayal of this character. It just seems like such a different stereotype of protagonist from which you would see in any other rom-com, where the guy chases the most popular chick in school or where the outgoing individual ends up falling for the shy introvert. Kat is a whole “IDGAF“ vibe and I really think that it is what makes the film very funny and special. In contrast, Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Patrick (which is amazing) complements Kat’s character to perfection. The plot of a mysterious reject accidentally falling in love with a very independent but intimidating girl who is emotionally closed off is pretty interesting. The relationship arc really goes crazy in this one.
Outside of Kat and Patrick, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s portrayal of Cameron was really enriching to the storyline. His characters is kind of like the glue that brings sticks the story together.
This film did what every rom-com nowadays tries to do (and very often fails to do) which is making you laugh, and feel. With relatable and intriguing characters, an interesting reason to WHY the characters end up with each other, good acting, a very nice soundtrack, and a nostalgic 2000’s rom-com vibe, this was a very good watch to me.
Peace :)
